Before selecting a building contractor, you should understand how the contractor intends to plan your project from start to finish. For example, if your project involves a room addition, determine exactly what your needs are, what the function of the room is, and how you want the job to look like on completion. Be specific in explaining to the contractor what you want, and be sure to approve any architectural plans that are involved in the job before the contractor begins the work.

You will find a wealth of information on every aspect of the building process. There are featured articles that cover real estate, land, residential plots excavation and planning all phases of the building process, including new trends in the building industry. It is extremely important to compare costs before making a financial commitment towards constructing a new building or any home improvement project. You should solicit at least two or three estimates from recommended contractors in the Builder’s Guide Magazine - estimates based upon the same building specifications, building supplies, labour and time needed to complete the project. Discuss estimates in detail with each contractor, making certain you understand the reasons for any variations in the prices.

Do not automatically choose the lowest price. A contractor's estimate might be higher because of the high quality of materials and detailed finishing required which takes up more time and labour. Ask the contractor for references from satisfied customers. If possible, visit and inspect their completed projects.
